Could somebody please tell me how valuable would the PHR and SPHR certifications be for a HR professional in India?
If not valuable, what are the other certifications that an Indian HR professional could look for?
A reply shall be highly appreciated.

I don't think PHR/SPHR certification carries significant value in the Indian Scenario. I have a PHR certification and lot of the employers, even people in the HR dept don't know what PHR/SPHR certification is.
In any case the certification is valid for the period of 3 years and has to be re-validated.
Hope i was able to answer your question.

According to what I know, its really a good Credential. Its much easier to CCP, issued by World at Work. Its harder to learn than JCA, and other certifications issued by ERI DLC.
This information is not to demotivate anyone, but to understand.
From the two websites SHRM and HRCI, the qualification seems really valude.
I like to have more comments.

Well I had also been thinkin of goin for a PHR exam.
But before doin that I, just took a free PHR test today on one of the websites. Not surprisingly, I found that many of the questions were from the US labour laws apart from the general ones. I personally feel that there mightnot be lots of value addition. More mature views invited.

But then there is GPHR as well. What about that?
And besides these certifications what are the other certifications that could be available and valuable for Indians?

If your are new to HR, PHR enhance most of your hr skills, infact its internationally recognized, and you better think about it, locally degree doesnt makes any sense. SPHR/GPHR is next level, and all certification like these need continous membership for exams and practices.
A old PHR/SPHR study guide is here from sybex, you can download it freely.
