All captured files are saved in LIBPCAP format, but WireShark can also read and automatically detect other captured files. In addition, you can read data from GZIP files without decompressing the archive.

To start the capture process, you only need to select the connection whose network information you want to view. You can choose the Ethernet adapter on your desktop computer or the wireless adapter on your MacBook. You can also capture Bluetooth, USB, VLAN, and other types of network traffic.
The expert information function can help you detect significant or unusual network behaviors. Thanks to the color coding system, you can easily read the information lines in the order of severity level. For example, red indicates that there is a malformed data packet generated by a Demoal-of-Service attack or a dying network card. At the same time, cyan may indicate a 404 error.
By specifying the type of traffic to be monitored, WireShark can be customized according to your needs. Therefore, you can only view packets that contain a specific protocol or use one of the predefined display filter expressions to filter the displayed traffic.

WireShark can read and write different file formats, such as Pcap NG, tcpdump, Cisco Secure IDS iplog, NetScreen snoop, Network Gneral Sniffer, and Visual Network Visual UpTime, to name a few.
In addition, WireShark also provides decryption support for multiple algorithms, including Kerberos, IPsec, SNMPv3, ISAKMP, WPA/WPA2, WEP and SSL/TLS. The output can be exported as a PostScript, CSV, plain text or XML file.
